In general, it should be noted that low-noise surfaces lose effectiveness on steeper gradients (>8%), but still reduce noise emissions. This influence is situation-dependent and is related to an increased share of engine noise in the total emissions in the gradient area. The relevance of the gradient increases with higher proportions of heavy traffic. However, with the increasing electrification of vehicle drives, the effectiveness-reducing effect of the gradient is likely to decrease in the future.

To investigate the emission and immission-related acoustic effects of SDA surfaces on gradients, a study is currently underway.
