Asphalt mixture

The mixture forms the technical interface between the tested individual materials and the installed layer. The goal of the success control is to ensure that the composition and processing correspond to the design.

The quality of the mixture is the decisive influencing factor in producing noise-effective and durable SDA pavements. Even slight deviations in composition, compaction behavior, or temperature control can significantly impair the acoustic and mechanical properties.

Contractors can ensure that the asphalt plant is capable of producing acoustically effective and durable SDA formulations by requesting initial tests. The tool Quiet-Pave Mix can be used to check whether the planned mixture meets the required acoustic and technical specifications.

Equally crucial are the manufacturing processes in the asphalt plant as well as the transport logistics:

  • Mixing temperature, homogeneity, and residence time in the mixer directly influence the material quality.

  • Transport equipment and transport duration must be carefully selected to avoid segregation, temperature losses, and premature aging of the mixture.

Compliance with these parameters should be verified through regular mixture tests on the construction site to ensure that the delivered material meets the specifications.

Laboratory tests before installation:

  • Void content (Marshall test): Control of the void content.

  • Water sensitivity (ITSR ≥ 70 %): Resistance to moisture influences.

  • Rutting depth (≤ 7.5 %): Resistance to permanent deformations at high temperatures.

  • Micro-Deval test: Assessment of the mechanical resistance of the mixture.

Production control in the plant:
The conformity of the ongoing mixture production is monitored through grain size distribution, binder content, mixing temperature, and homogeneity. Deviations should be assessed according to the Operating Compliance Level (OCL). Higher OCL levels ideally lead to more frequent tests and tighter tolerances.
